The Austrian Football Association announced on Sunday that midfielder Marcel Sabitzer will miss the group stage matches in the UEFA Nations League, after agreeing with the coaching staff to take a break from international participation.
Sabitzer, a player for Borussia Dortmund, explained that the decision came as a result of the intense match schedule over the past two years, noting that he has effectively played three seasons since the Euro 2024 tournament, due to participation in the Club World Cup and the World Cup.
The 32-year-old player stated in a statement to the Austrian Association that he still wishes to continue playing at the highest level for several more years, but he sees the necessity of managing his energy better during the upcoming phase.
He added that he agreed with coach Ralf Rangnick, after discussions he described as frank and based on trust, to take a temporary break, with a reassessment of his situation planned for early next year, before the start of the Euro 2028 qualifiers.
For his part, Rangnick confirmed his understanding of Sabitzer's decision, expressing hope that the player will be ready to return to the national team when needed.
Rangnick is scheduled to announce the Austria squad for the Nations League matches on Monday, where they will face Israel and Kosovo, before the matches against Ireland and Kosovo in October.
