Ahmed Al-Hanfoosh, the coach of our national under-17 team, spoke to FIFA's official website about his team's ambitions in the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup, the legacy of the 1989 achievement, and the importance of participating in the tournament for the second consecutive year.
The Saudi under-17 team is set for a new appearance on the global stage, with the upcoming U-17 World Cup in Qatar, which will take place from November 19 to December 13, featuring 48 teams for the second time in the tournament's history.
The "young green" marks its second consecutive participation and fifth in history in the U-17 World Cup, having returned to the tournament in the 2025 edition, continuing its presence in a competition that holds a special place in the history of Saudi football.
This special status dates back to 1989, when the Saudi team achieved a historic milestone by winning the world title, which was then known as the U-16 World Championship. This achievement remains vivid in the memory of Saudi football and serves as an inspiration for generations aiming to leave their mark on the international stage.
In Qatar, Coach Ahmed Al-Hanfoosh's team faces a tough challenge, as they will compete against France, Uruguay, and Haiti in Group D. Despite the strength of their opponents, the team enters the tournament aiming to first advance beyond the group stage and then tackle each phase one step at a time.
Al-Hanfoosh, 47 years old, spoke to FIFA about his team's ambitions in Qatar, the value of participating in the U-17 World Cup for the second consecutive year, the impact of the 1989 generation's legacy, as well as his vision for his players' future and his ambition to help prepare a new generation that serves Saudi football.
For the second consecutive year, the Saudi under-17 team is participating in the World Cup. What does this mean to you, and how is your enthusiasm?
The Saudi team's qualification for the World Cup for the second consecutive time reflects the continuous development of Saudi football at the youth levels. The excitement is very high for participating in the tournament, and the most important thing is that we enter the World Cup, God willing, fully prepared.
You have been placed in a tough group alongside France, Uruguay, and Haiti. How do you assess the level of your opponents?
Certainly, we respect all the teams that are in our group. The teams of France and Uruguay represent two global schools with a rich history in football, and the Haitian team should not be underestimated. It is our duty to prepare in the best possible way to face these teams and work towards qualifying from the group, God willing.
What is your ambition or the stage you wish to reach during this edition of the World Cup?
Certainly, our ambition, as well as that of the leadership and the Saudi fans, is to qualify from the group stage, God willing, and then to handle the tournament step by step.
Does playing in Qatar help you perform better due to the proximity and somewhat similar climate to Saudi Arabia?
Playing in the brotherly country of Qatar is undoubtedly a positive factor for us, given the proximity and similar conditions. We hope to take advantage of this factor positively, which will benefit our team during the tournament.
The under-17 team won the title in 1989. Can you achieve another significant achievement for Saudi football?
Certainly, the generation that won the World Cup in 1989 is an inspiration for all generations in Saudi football. However, the current generation wants to write its own story by delivering the best possible performance during the tournament. We are not ready to make promises, but we are prepared to work in the best possible way to deliver a performance that reflects the image and identity of Saudi football and embodies its future.
How do you see the experience of hosting the U-17 World Cup annually, and how does it help the youth sector?
Hosting the tournament annually is extremely positive and a great opportunity to discover more talents. International exposure gives young players a greater chance to develop, which is a positive aspect credited to FIFA. I hope the tournament continues in the same annual format and receives greater support.
What are your personal and collective ambitions in the coming years?
My personal ambition is certainly linked to the team's ambition during this period. Every coach aspires to develop through the experiences they undergo. I also have a great ambition to develop the players and contribute to creating a generation that serves Saudi football until the 2034 World Cup.
