أعلن نادي أوليمبيا الباراغواياني تعاقده مع المدافع النيوزيلندي تيم باين بعقد يمتد لموسم واحد، عقب الضجة الجماهيرية والإعلامية التي رافقت مشاركته مع منتخب بلاده في كأس العالم 2026.
وكانت شبكة «سكاي سبورتس» قد أفادت في وقت سابق بأن باين سينضم إلى النادي الباراغواياني العريق عقب انتهاء مشوار نيوزيلندا في البطولة المقامة حالياً في الولايات المتحدة والمكسيك وكندا.
وأثار أوليمبيا التكهنات بشأن الصفقة قبل الإعلان الرسمي عنها، بعدما نشر عبر حسابه على منصة «إنستغرام» صورة تضمنت علم نيوزيلندا ورمزاً تعبيرياً لعضلة الذراع، قبيل مواجهة المنتخب النيوزيلندي أمام إيران في افتتاح منافسات المجموعة السابعة، التي انتهت بالتعادل 2-2، قبل أن يؤكد لاحقاً إتمام التعاقد دون الكشف عن تفاصيل إضافية.
واكتسب باين، مدافع ويلينغتون فينكس البالغ من العمر 32 عاماً، شهرة عالمية لافتة خلال البطولة، بعدما أطلق أحد المؤثرين الأرجنتينيين حملة على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي وصفه فيها بأنه «أقل اللاعبين شهرة في كأس العالم»، داعياً الجماهير إلى متابعته.
وأحدثت الحملة تفاعلاً واسعاً، إذ ارتفع عدد متابعي اللاعب على «إنستغرام» من أقل من خمسة آلاف متابع إلى نحو 5.8 مليون، ليصبح أحد أبرز الظواهر الجماهيرية المصاحبة للبطولة.
ويُعد أوليمبيا أكثر الأندية الباراغوايانية حضوراً على الساحة القارية، إذ يبقى النادي الوحيد في البلاد الذي تُوج بثلاثة ألقاب في كأس ليبرتادوريس. كما ضمن المشاركة في النسخة القادمة من البطولة بعد فوزه بلقب الدوري المحلي، إلى جانب تأهله إلى دور الـ16 من كأس «سودامريكانا».
The Paraguayan club Olimpia announced its signing of New Zealand defender Tim Payne on a one-season contract, following the public and media buzz surrounding his participation with his national team in the 2026 World Cup.
Earlier, the "Sky Sports" network reported that Payne would join the prestigious Paraguayan club after New Zealand's journey in the tournament currently taking place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada came to an end.
Olimpia sparked speculation about the deal before the official announcement by posting a picture on its Instagram account that included the New Zealand flag and an emoji of a flexed bicep, just before the New Zealand national team's match against Iran in the opening of Group G, which ended in a 2-2 draw, before later confirming the completion of the contract without disclosing additional details.
Payne, a 32-year-old defender from Wellington Phoenix, gained significant global fame during the tournament after an Argentine influencer launched a social media campaign describing him as "the least famous player in the World Cup," urging fans to follow him.
The campaign generated widespread interaction, as the player's Instagram followers skyrocketed from less than five thousand to about 5.8 million, making him one of the most notable fan phenomena associated with the tournament.
Olimpia is the most prominent Paraguayan club on the continental stage, being the only club in the country that has won three titles in the Copa Libertadores. It has also secured participation in the upcoming edition of the tournament after winning the local league title, in addition to qualifying for the Round of 16 in the Copa Sudamericana.
