The Dutch head coach of the Indonesian national team, Patrick Kluivert, confirmed that his team delivered a commendable performance despite missing the opportunity to qualify after losing to Iraq by a single goal, in the second round of the fourth stage of the Asian playoff for the 2026 World Cup.
Kluivert stated during the press conference held after the match that the Indonesian team gained significant experience throughout their journey in the qualifiers, noting that both positive and negative results contributed to building the team on both individual and collective levels.
He added, "The dream of reaching the World Cup was close, but it slipped away from our hands, and this is painful for me and for the Indonesian people, as it was a collective dream that everyone worked towards with sincerity." He indicated that it would take time to review the experience and analyze what happened, pointing out that the Indonesian people can be proud of what the players and coaching staff achieved, affirming that the efforts made were substantial despite not achieving the desired result.
Regarding the team's readiness to compete at the highest Asian levels, he said, "The team is not small, as some may think. The players showed excellent performance against strong teams like Saudi Arabia and Iraq, which are ranked 59th and 58th in the world, while we are ranked 118th. Nevertheless, we delivered a remarkable performance with high spirit and great discipline."
Kluivert concluded his statement by saying, "The Indonesian people can hold their heads high with pride for what this generation of players has accomplished, as everyone demonstrated commitment and sincere effort that deserves appreciation."
