The Malawi Football Association published an official statement explaining the reasons for not holding the match, stating: "The Malawi Football Association would like to inform the public that the World Cup qualifying match between Malawi and Equatorial Guinea, which was scheduled for today at the Bingu National Stadium, will not take place due to unexpected travel difficulties affecting the visiting team."

It added: "FIFA has officially canceled the match. The Malawi Football Association will provide additional updates regarding the status of tickets that were purchased in advance... We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this development may cause."

Both Malawi and Equatorial Guinea are in Group E of the African qualifiers for the World Cup.
