The coach of the Irish Al-Qadisiyah team, Brendan Rodgers, expressed his pride in his players' performance following the draw against Qatari Al-Sadd, with each team scoring one goal in the AFC Champions League elite competition, praising the fighting spirit the team showed despite the pressure of matches and difficult physical conditions.
He said: "I thank the players for the great effort they put in; they fought until the end and showed a strong character in coming back after Al-Sadd's goal. The match was difficult due to the high humidity and having played a strong match two days prior, and I see the draw as a fair result, especially since both teams had chances to score."
He added: "We have five points from three matches, and we still have the opportunity to continue collecting points and advancing in the tournament, and I am very proud of what the team has achieved."
Regarding the substitution of Mohamed Abu Al-Shamat, Rodgers said: "Mohamed is a distinguished player and has been performing well this season, as he has impressive statistics in the full-back position. The decision to substitute him was part of some tactical changes, taking into account that he received a yellow card and the danger of the opposing player in the same area, so we preferred to make the change, and Turki Al-Amar provided a good addition after coming on."
Rodgers continued: "We are facing some injuries, and we are playing a large number of matches in hot conditions, and I would like to thank all the players for what they are doing. In football, we win some matches and draw or lose others, and this is part of the game."
In response to a question from "Okaz" about Al-Qadisiyah's control of the match, Rodgers pointed out that the team was not at the required level in the final third of the field, explaining: "We were not precise enough in passing when we reached the attacking areas, despite having the quality and ability to create chances. When we recycled the ball and switched play to the other side, we were able to reach the spaces faster, but we did not capitalize on that as we should have."
Rodgers concluded his remarks by emphasizing the difficulty of the match congestion, saying: "Some may expect us to win every match, but football does not work that way. We faced a strong match on Friday against one of the best teams in Asia, and we exerted a great physical effort during it, then played again shortly after without having enough time to recover. The players gave everything they had, and we know we can do more, and we are now looking forward to our next match."
