The official report published by the Ballon d'Or website revealed the intricate behind-the-scenes processes and regulations governing the selection of winners for the current edition, highlighting the strict criteria that ensure the integrity of the most prestigious award in the field of football worldwide.
The evaluation time period
The award's evaluation is based on the overall performance of players during the football season extending from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026. This period includes all major domestic tournaments and continental and international competitions, foremost among them the Men's World Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations, the Asian Cup, in addition to the major European finals for women.
Formation of the judging committees and selection mechanism for countries
The selection of winners is carried out through an international network of specialized sports journalists, with one journalist representative from each country, according to the FIFA ranking published on September 8, 2026:
• Men's award: Journalists representing the top 100 countries in the FIFA ranking participate in the voting.
• Women's award: Journalists representing the top 50 countries in the global ranking participate in the voting.
Points system and title determination method
Each member of the judging committee selects and ranks 10 players from a list of 30 nominees announced by "France Football," with points awarded in descending order as follows: 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point. The player who accumulates the highest total points is crowned with the Ballon d'Or.
Voting criteria for subsidiary awards
The other awards accompanying the Ballon d'Or are subject to mechanisms that ensure the recognition of all aspects of the game:
• Best goalkeeper: Journalists select 3 male goalkeepers (awarding 5, 3, and 1 points) and 2 female goalkeepers (awarding 2 and 1 point).
• Best coach and best club: Two names are chosen from among 5 nominees based on the quality of play, titles achieved, sportsmanship, and tactical leadership, with the first choice receiving two points and the second one point.
• Best young talent: This award is withheld from journalists and assigned to special committees; in the men's category, previous Ballon d'Or winners vote, while in the women's category, previous winners along with those crowned since 2018 and the editor-in-chief of "France Football" vote.
• Top scorer award: This is the only award that does not undergo a voting process; it is automatically awarded to the player with the most goals scored for clubs and national teams during the specified period.
• Socrates Award: This is dedicated to community initiatives and charitable projects, selected by a joint committee comprising representatives from "France Football," "L'Équipe" newspaper, and the international organization (Peace and Sport).
