The Qatari national team is preparing to return to the Gulf stage in the 27th Gulf Cup, hosted by Saudi Arabia from September 23 to October 6, in search of its fourth title and its first since 2014.
The Maroons are relying on technical stability under the leadership of Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui, who led the team to a historic qualification for the 2026 World Cup through the playoff after their first participation as hosts in 2022.
Unlike the 2023 Basra edition, where they participated with a reserve team under Bruno Miguel after the departure of Felix Sanchez, and the 2025 Kuwait edition with interim coach Luis Garcia, the Qatari team is entering this time with its core structure, making it the most cohesive.
Lopetegui's squad includes only 3 new faces: Hashim Ali, Tahseen Mohammed, and Naif Al-Hadhrami, while relying on the same elements from the World Cup led by Akram Afif, a two-time Asian Player of the Year, as the on-field captain.
Although the tournament serves as a rehearsal for the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, where the Maroons defend their two continental titles, the public demand is to reclaim the Gulf title.
The team will begin its journey with a tough test against the defending champion Bahrain on September 24 in a tournament that allows no room for error.
Coach Lopetegui's squad includes 26 players: In goal: Salah Zakaria, Shahab Al-Laythi, and Mahmoud Abu Nida, along with players: Ahmed Alaa, Ahmed Fathi, Akram Afif, Ayoub Al-Alawi, Edmilson Junior, Jassim Jaber, Sultan Al-Breik, Tarek Salman, Asem Madbou, Issa Lai, Abdulaziz Hatem, Tahseen Mohammed, Naif Al-Hadhrami, Mohammed Munai, Hamam Al-Amin, Almoez Ali, Youssef Abdulrazak, Hashim Ali, Hassan Al-Haydous, Khokhi Boualam, Pedro Miguel, Ahmed Al-Janahi, and Karim Boudiaf.
