وبحسب شبكة «أوبتا» المتخصصة في إحصاءات كرة القدم، فقد عادل كريستيانو رونالدو رقم أسطورة منتخب ألمانيا لوثار ماتيوس ثاني أكثر اللاعبين مشاركةً في تاريخ كأس العالم (25 مباراة لكل منهما)، فيما يتصدر قائد منتخب الأرجنتين ليونيل ميسي قائمة الأكثر مشاركة برصيد 28 مباراة.

وكان رونالدو قد تعرّض لانتقادات حادة بسبب ظهوره بمستوى متواضع في تعادل البرتغال مع الكونغو الديمقراطية بنتيجة 1-1 في الجولة الافتتاحية من المونديال، لكنه رد على منتقديه بتسجيل هدفين في فوز «برازيل أوروبا» على أوزبكستان بنتيجة 5-0 في الجولة الثانية.
