أوضح رئيس الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم جياني إنفانتينو، عبر منشور في حسابه الرسمي على منصة التواصل الاجتماعي «إنستغرام»، أنه عقد اجتماعا مع الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب؛ لمناقشة الاستعدادات الجارية لاستضافة بطولة كأس العالم 2026 المقررة إقامتها في الولايات المتحدة وكندا والمكسيك. وتطرقا خلال اللقاء إلى الأوضاع الحالية المتعلقة بالمنتخب الإيراني بعد التأهل رسميا إلى المونديال، مشيراً إلى أن ترمب مرحباً بمشاركة المنتخب الإيراني في البطولة مثل باقي المنتخبات المشاركة، رغم التوترات السياسية القائمة، وفق التقرير الذي بثه موقع الـ«RT». وأضاف إنفانتينو أن بطولة كأس العالم تبقى حدثا عالميا مهما، مؤكدا أن العالم بحاجة إليها أكثر من أي وقت مضى، لما تمثله من فرصة لتوحيد الشعوب عبر الرياضة.
وكان ترمب صرح في وقت سابق بأنه لا يهتم كثيرا بإمكانية استبعاد المنتخب الإيراني من البطولة، معتبرا أن إيران تمر بظروف صعبة، وأن قدراتها أصبحت محدودة، على حد تعبيره.

During the meeting, they addressed the current situation regarding the Iranian national team after its official qualification for the World Cup, noting that Trump is welcoming the participation of the Iranian team in the tournament like the other participating teams, despite the existing political tensions, according to a report broadcasted by the "RT" website. Infantino added that the World Cup remains an important global event, emphasizing that the world needs it now more than ever, as it represents an opportunity to unite people through sports.
Trump had previously stated that he does not care much about the possibility of excluding the Iranian team from the tournament, considering that Iran is going through difficult circumstances and that its capabilities have become limited, as he put it.
