تلقى ليفربول ضربة مبكرة بإصابة ظهيره الأيمن جيريمي فريمبونغ، ليغادر ملعب المباراة في الدقيقة 19، ويدخل كونور برادلي بدلاً منه.
وفي الدقيقة 26، افتتح فرانكفورت التسجيل عن طريق راسموس كريستنسن، لكن ليفربول كشر عن أنيابه بتسجيل 3 أهداف متتالية بتوقيع هوغو إيكيتيكي، وفيرجيل فان دايك، وإبراهيما كوناتي في الدقائق 35، و39، و44، لينتهي الشوط الأول بتقدم «الريدز» بثلاثة أهداف مقابل هدف.
