The "Alpecin" team announced the withdrawal of Belgian cyclist Jasper Philipsen from the 112th edition of the Tour de France, after he was involved in a collision during the third stage that stretched from Valenciennes to Dunkirk today (Monday).
The incident occurred about 60 kilometers from the finish line, following a clash between Frenchman Bryan Coquard and Belgian Laurens De Plus, which caused the former to lose his balance and fall, before Philipsen collided with him forcefully, resulting in visible injuries to the 27-year-old Belgian cyclist.
Medical teams immediately intervened to provide first aid, before Philipsen was transported by ambulance to a nearby medical center. Footage showed physical injuries to his shoulders and a tear in the upper part of his jersey, while no official statement has yet been issued by the medical authorities or the team regarding the nature of the injury or developments in his health condition.
Philipsen's withdrawal is a significant loss for the "Alpecin" team, after he opened the competition with a victory in the first stage and wore the yellow jersey, in addition to holding the green jersey as the leader of the points classification. He has a total of 10 victories in the Tour de France, which is the second highest number among participants in the current edition, after Slovenian Tadej Pogačar (17 wins).
His teammate, Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel, recorded the fastest time in the second stage, snatching the yellow jersey from Philipsen, which reinforced the team's dominance in the early stages of the tour before this unexpected setback.
This withdrawal marks an early end to Philipsen's journey in the current tour, as he aspired to replicate his achievement in the 2023 edition, during which he won 4 stages and was crowned with the green jersey.
