تحولت لحظات الوداع الأخيرة التي يفترض أن تمنح العائلات بعض السكينة إلى قضية هزت الرأي العام في بريطانيا، بعدما كشفت التحقيقات عن مخالفات صادمة داخل إحدى شركات خدمات الجنازات، شملت الاحتفاظ بجثامين لمدد طويلة وتسليم رفات خاطئة لذوي متوفين.
ويمثل مدير إحدى شركات خدمات الجنازات في بريطانيا أمام المحكمة، حيث يواجه عقوبة قد تصل إلى السجن، بعد إقراره بارتكاب عشرات المخالفات على مدى 12 عاماً، في قضية طالت مئات العائلات.
وخلال جلسات إصدار الحكم، وصف موظف سابق بالشركة المشهد داخل المنشأة بأنه «مرعب»، مشيراً إلى أن الجثامين تُركت داخل مرافق التبريد بدلاً من استكمال إجراءات الحرق في مواعيدها.
وبحسب الادعاء، عثرت الشرطة، بعد تلقيها بلاغاً، على 31 جثماناً داخل منطقة التبريد، كان من المفترض حرق بعضها قبل أشهر، من بينها جثمان طفل وُلد ميتاً وبقي في الموقع قرابة عامين. كما ضُبط أكثر من 100 وعاء يحتوي على رماد بشري.
وأوضح الادعاء أن الجثامين كانت موضوعة على رفوف داخل الغرفة، وأن معظمها لم يكن مغطى، فيما ظهرت على عدد منها علامات التحلل.
وكان المتهم، البالغ من العمر 48 عاماً، قد أقر سابقاً بالذنب في 67 تهمة، من بينها مخالفات تتعلق بالتعامل مع الجثامين وعمليات احتيال استهدفت بعض العملاء.
وخلال التحقيقات، قال المتهم إنه واجه أزمة مالية نتيجة تعثر المدفوعات، وإن ديونه بلغت نحو 90 ألف جنيه إسترليني، كما أقر بأنه كان يعلم بوجود عشرات الجثامين داخل أحد المواقع، بينها عدد كان ينتظر الحرق.
إلا أن الادعاء رفض اعتبار الضائقة المالية مبرراً لما حدث، مشيراً إلى أن الشركة حققت إيرادات تجاوزت 3 ملايين جنيه إسترليني بين مارس 2017 وأبريل 2024، في حين أن تكلفة عملية الحرق الواحدة كانت تبلغ نحو 500 جنيه إسترليني.
وأضاف الادعاء أن المتهم اختار عدم تنفيذ الخدمات التي ائتمنته عليها العائلات، موجهاً أموال الشركة إلى نفقات شخصية وإنفاق وصفه بـ«المفرط»، بدلاً من الوفاء بالتزاماته.
ووصل المتهم إلى المحكمة وهو يرتدي قبعة ووشاحاً لإخفاء ملامح وجهه، بينما تتواصل جلسات النطق بالحكم.
وتسلط القضية الضوء على طبيعة تنظيم قطاع خدمات الجنازات في إنجلترا وويلز، إذ يمكن لأي شخص تأسيس شركة ومزاولة المهنة دون الحصول على ترخيص رسمي.

The director of one of the funeral service companies in Britain is appearing before the court, facing a penalty that could lead to imprisonment, after admitting to committing dozens of violations over 12 years, in a case that affected hundreds of families.
During the sentencing sessions, a former employee of the company described the scene inside the facility as "terrifying," noting that the bodies were left inside the refrigeration units instead of completing the cremation procedures on time.
According to the prosecution, the police found 31 bodies inside the refrigeration area after receiving a report, some of which were supposed to have been cremated months ago, including the body of a stillborn baby that had remained on site for nearly two years. More than 100 containers containing human ashes were also seized.
The prosecution clarified that the bodies were placed on shelves inside the room, and that most of them were not covered, while signs of decomposition were evident on several of them.
The accused, who is 48 years old, had previously pleaded guilty to 67 charges, including violations related to handling bodies and fraud targeting some clients.
During the investigations, the accused stated that he faced a financial crisis due to payment defaults, and that his debts amounted to about £90,000, admitting that he was aware of the presence of dozens of bodies at one of the sites, including some that were awaiting cremation.
However, the prosecution rejected the notion that financial distress justified what happened, pointing out that the company generated revenues exceeding £3 million between March 2017 and April 2024, while the cost of a single cremation was about £500.
The prosecution added that the accused chose not to carry out the services entrusted to him by families, directing the company's funds towards personal expenses and what was described as "excessive" spending, instead of fulfilling his obligations.
The accused arrived at the court wearing a hat and scarf to conceal his facial features, as the sentencing sessions continue.
The case highlights the nature of the regulation of the funeral services sector in England and Wales, as anyone can establish a company and practice the profession without obtaining an official license.
Investigations began in March 2024 after a report raised concerns about the handling of bodies within the institution.
Among the charges against the accused are four counts of fraud, which involved delivering ashes to several women that were claimed to belong to their lost fetuses before investigations revealed that this was not true.
