Clashes between police and protesters escalated in Germany and France today (Saturday), as youth protests in Frankfurt turned into riots that resulted in injuries to several police officers, while Paris witnessed violent confrontations where police used tear gas and batons to disperse protesters, amid rising tensions in several French cities.
German Interior Minister of Hesse, Roman Pozik, announced, based on preliminary estimates, that several police officers were injured during the riots that occurred at a youth demonstration in Frankfurt, Germany's financial capital, noting that one of them might have sustained more serious injuries, pending verification of their condition.
Decisions to Disperse the Protests
Pozik, a member of the Christian Democratic Union led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, explained that the police decided to disperse the demonstration called by the "Gen Z Regelt" (Generation Z Takes Charge) initiative after repeated incidents of firecrackers being thrown and stones being hurled.
He stated that warnings about the possible infiltration of violent elements from the far-left among the protesters were confirmed, estimating the number of participants in the leftist-motivated violence to be around 100 individuals, whom he accused of intensively attacking the police with bottles, stones, and incendiary materials.
The Interior Minister confirmed that the police managed to control the situation, while the number of participants in the demonstration reached about 8,000 at its peak, according to police estimates, compared to 9,000 according to the organizers.
Confrontations in Paris
In France, clashes broke out between police and protesters in Paris today, as the protest march reached its final destination, amid rising tensions in the cities of Marseille and Toulouse, with tear gas being used in the streets of the capital.
Police reported that dozens of masked individuals, dressed in black, used hammers to uproot paving stones and hurled them at security forces, while at least one incendiary bottle was thrown towards the police.
Security forces responded by firing tear gas and carrying out dispersal operations using batons, while Paris police stated that a group of several hundred rioters attacked their officers with projectiles, including a Molotov cocktail.
They added that police officers moved to restore public order, while authorities indicated that the dispersal of the demonstration was taking place without significant difficulties, with a water cannon truck stationed near the designated endpoint of the march.
