The British police announced that charges have been brought against a member of the Royal Navy, suspected of committing offenses under the British National Security Act, including obtaining protected information believed to benefit a foreign country whose identity has not been disclosed.
The police stated that the accused, named Teddy Young, 24 years old, from Bedfordshire, faces charges related to obtaining, retaining, or copying protected information, with suspicion that this was done with the intent to benefit a foreign power.
According to British media reports, Young was arrested at his home in Bedfordshire on Tuesday before being detained in connection with the case. He is scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of the Counter Terrorism Police in London, stated that the charges against the accused are "extremely serious," noting that it concerns an individual still serving in the British armed forces.
Charges Related to Protected Information
According to the police, the charges cover actions alleged to have occurred between November 26, 2024, and May 21, 2025.
The case includes a charge of acting in preparation for committing an offense related to disclosing protected information, in violation of the National Security Act.
Young is also accused of having obtained, copied, recorded, or retained protected information, with the intention of using this conduct to serve the interests of a foreign power.
The charges also indicate that the accused was aware, or should reasonably have been aware in light of other circumstances known to him, that this conduct could harm the security or interests of the United Kingdom.
Coordination with the Ministry of Defense
Commander Flanagan confirmed that the police worked closely with the relevant operational agencies within the British Ministry of Defense throughout the investigation, aiming to take appropriate measures to mitigate any potential risks associated with the case.
She emphasized that the investigation was conducted in coordination with the relevant authorities, given the sensitivity of the case and its connection to a member of the British armed forces.
The Royal Navy Confirms the Incident
For its part, a spokesperson for the Royal Navy confirmed that a service member has been charged, but declined to provide further details due to ongoing legal proceedings.
The spokesperson stated that the ongoing nature of the case makes it inappropriate to comment further at this stage, and the police confirmed that the case is not related to the recent incident at the Royal Air Force base in Fairford.
The charges come as part of the enforcement of the British National Security Act, while authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the foreign country that the information was allegedly intended to benefit, and the charges have not yet been adjudicated.
