The list of the richest cities in the world prepared by "Oxford Economics" showed that Dammam is the only Arab city in the list, ranking thirty-ninth globally with an average GDP per capita of $97,100. This was reported by "Al Arabiya.net".
Central Position
This performance reflects the central position of the Eastern Province as the hub of oil and gas production in the Kingdom, as well as hosting headquarters and facilities related to the energy sector, which is considered one of the highest value-added sectors per capita globally. Although global wealth has traditionally been concentrated in financial and business capitals like New York and London, the list of the richest cities in the world by GDP per capita reveals that technology and innovation centers have become the most prominent drivers of wealth generation.
Significant Gap
According to the list, San Jose, California topped the rankings with an average GDP per capita of approximately $238,700 annually, significantly ahead of its closest competitor, benefiting from its location in the heart of Silicon Valley, which hosts global technology giants and companies in artificial intelligence and semiconductors.
San Francisco came in second with about $181,900 per capita, while Dublin ranked third at $159,700, benefiting from hosting the European headquarters of major American technology companies due to its investment-attractive tax system.
Top Ranks
The top ranks in the list reflect the increasing role of the technology sector in urban wealth formation. Cities like San Jose, San Francisco, and Seattle, which host global companies, dominate the top positions due to high productivity and wage levels.
Seattle also emerged in fifth place with an average of $152,000 per capita, while Boston and Washington, D.C. entered the list, supported by a mix of technology, scientific research, and government and financial services.
High-Value Wealth Model
Swiss cities secured a prominent position among the top ranks, with Basel coming in fourth at $156,300 per capita, followed by Geneva in seventh and Zurich in ninth, while Bern and Lausanne also appeared in the list. The strong Swiss presence reflects the local economy's reliance on advanced pharmaceutical industries, financial services, and wealth management, which are sectors that achieve high value-added compared to the population size.
New York is Not First
Despite its status as the largest financial center in the world, New York ranked only tenth with about $129,300 per capita. This indicates that the overall size of the city's economy does not necessarily reflect its ranking in per capita output, as larger cities with high population density fall behind smaller, more specialized centers in high-productivity sectors.
