Relations between Britain and Israel are heading towards further tension, as the date set by Israel to close the British consulate in East Jerusalem approaches, amid indications that London is preparing to respond with similar diplomatic measures that may include expelling a number of Israeli diplomats from Britain.
Today (Tuesday), Reuters reported, citing four informed sources, that Britain may expel Israeli diplomats if Israel implements its decision to close the British consulate in East Jerusalem, a move that would represent a significant escalation in relations between the two countries. According to the sources, the British response may be based on reciprocity, whereby London expels a number of Israeli diplomats roughly equivalent to the number of British staff who will lose their accreditation.
The roots of the crisis date back to last September, when Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar ordered the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem, giving London a 30-day deadline to implement the decision. The Israeli move came in response to the announcement by Britain, France, and Canada of measures to prevent the import of certain goods produced in Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
The British consulate in East Jerusalem is particularly significant, as it handles matters related to Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza Strip, and is also accredited to the Palestinian Authority. It employs about 30 diplomats and staff, along with their family members, according to the sources that spoke to Reuters.
In an attempt to prevent the closure decision from being implemented, British National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell made an unannounced visit to Israel last week and met with Israeli officials, but the discussions did not lead to an agreement to keep the consulate open, while diplomatic communications continued.
The crisis comes amid increasing disagreements between London and Tel Aviv regarding Israeli settlement in the West Bank and Israeli policies towards Palestinians. Britain views settlement expansion and violence by settlers as undermining the prospects for a two-state solution, while Israel has accused London of interfering in its internal affairs.
If the consulate is closed, the expulsion of Israeli diplomats could open the door to an unprecedented diplomatic crisis between the two countries and increase international pressure on Israel regarding its policies in the Palestinian territories.
