The sound of two explosions was heard in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, during the night, coinciding with escalating tensions and armed clashes in the Tigray region in the north of the country, amid strict security measures imposed by the authorities on the movement of drones in the capital and the surrounding areas.
Bloomberg reported, citing informed diplomats, that one of the explosions occurred near the "4 Kilo" area in central Addis Ababa, while the other took place near the headquarters of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces.
The nature of the explosions and the reasons for their occurrence remain unclear, and the Ethiopian authorities have not officially announced any drone attack within the capital, nor disclosed the extent of the damages and losses resulting from the incidents.
Open Ban on Drones
Hours before the explosions were heard, the Ethiopian National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) announced an open-ended ban on the operation of all types of drones in Addis Ababa and the surrounding areas, effective immediately.
The agency confirmed the suspension of issuing permits for drone operations until further notice, warning that any drone operating in violation of the decision would be subject to monitoring, interception, and forced landing, with operators being tracked and legal action taken against them.
It also indicated the use of integrated technologies to monitor the airspace of the capital and address threats related to drones.
The National Intelligence and Security Service did not directly link the ban decision to the renewed fighting in the north of the country in its announcement.
The decision coincides with reports of drone attacks targeting military facilities and airports in various regions of Ethiopia, including the Harar Meda Air Base in Bishoftu, southeast of Addis Ababa.
According to data from conflict monitoring entities, several drone attacks occurred on facilities belonging to the Ethiopian Air Force on September 27, although the identity of the perpetrators of all these attacks remains unclear independently.
Ongoing Escalation in Tigray
The developments in the capital come at a time when northern Ethiopia is witnessing a rapid military escalation, with renewed fighting between Ethiopian federal forces and troops affiliated with the Tigray People's Liberation Front and its allies.
On September 23, Tigray forces took control of Mekelle Airport, according to media reports, prompting Ethiopian Airlines to suspend flights to Mekelle, Axum, and Shire. Tigray authorities announced that they were acting in defense of the region, accusing federal forces of launching attacks using drones and artillery.
The following days saw clashes in other areas of the north, while government forces announced the recapture of strategic areas, including Alamata in southern Tigray, amid ongoing battles and conflicting narratives from the parties involved regarding the field developments.
The African Union and the European Union expressed their concern over the renewed fighting, calling on the parties to exercise restraint and return to the path of dialogue, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need.
