Egypt has warned of the repercussions of the ongoing Israeli escalation in the occupied West Bank, reiterating its rejection of Israeli calls to expand operations and undermine the Palestinian Authority, at a time when settlers continue to storm the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned, in a statement yesterday (Sunday), the Israeli escalation in the West Bank and the repeated incursions of settlers into the Al-Aqsa Mosque under the protection of the Israeli police, as well as the strict measures and restrictions imposed on the movement of Palestinian citizens.
Egypt firmly rejected the statements made by Israeli officials calling for the expansion of operations in the West Bank and the undermining of the Palestinian Authority, warning of the consequences of these practices on the situation in the Palestinian territories.
Egypt renewed its demand to halt unilateral and escalatory measures and to respect the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem, amid repeated warnings that the continued alteration of facts on the ground, particularly in Jerusalem and the West Bank, could increase tensions and undermine the chances of achieving peace.
The Egyptian stance comes within the context of ongoing diplomatic efforts regarding the Israeli escalation in the Palestinian territories. Cairo condemned the incursions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque earlier this September and previously warned of the dangers of settlement expansion, settler violence, and measures aimed at changing the status quo in Jerusalem.
Egypt places special importance on preserving the historical and legal status of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, viewing any unilateral measures aimed at changing this status as an additional factor for increasing tension in the region.
Cairo also renewed its support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, considering this as the basis for its position on resolving the Palestinian issue, alongside supporting the two-state solution in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
In recent months, Egypt has participated in Arab and international efforts to warn against the escalation of settlement activities, settler violence, and Israeli measures in the West Bank, emphasizing the need for the international community to act to halt the escalation and preserve opportunities for a political settlement of the Palestinian issue.
