The British authorities have arrested five individuals on suspicion of committing offenses under the Explosives Act, before detaining them again on suspicion of "preparing for a terrorist act," while the Counter-Terrorism Police opened an investigation today (Sunday) into a security incident near the Royal Air Force base "Fairford" in Gloucestershire.
The "Financial Times" reported that the police received a report at 12:45 AM today regarding three suspicious vehicles that appeared to be heading towards the base, prompting armed patrols to move in and stop five individuals in the nearby Wilford area, noting that the investigation is still in its early stages and that the detainees are in custody.
The police imposed a security cordon about 400 meters around the vehicles, while specialized military teams examined them, and around 85 homes were evacuated as a precaution to a nearby recreational center.
Gloucestershire Police announced that the incident is "major," confirming that the situation is "under control."
In a notable development, the "Telegraph" reported from British security sources that the police are investigating the possibility of an Iranian connection to a bombing plot targeting a base used by American forces.
Aerial images showed a robot designed to handle explosives examining three white trucks, while the rear doors of two of them were open, without the authorities revealing the nature of what was found inside the vehicles or the identities and nationalities of the detainees.
The "Fairford" base houses the 501st Combat Support Wing of the U.S. Air Force and is considered a forward European location for heavy American bombers. Since March 2026, the base has been used for the takeoff of American bombers of the B-1 and B-52 models, as part of operations that London and Washington stated are defensive in nature and targeted Iranian missile sites linked to threats against ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard warned on July 23 that any base used for operations against Iran would be a "legitimate target."
