A naval exercise in Kazakhstan turned into a military tragedy, as rough waves swept 14 soldiers out to sea, resulting in their deaths. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, which has led to the arrest of 5 officials from the Ministry of Defense, including the first deputy commander of the navy.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs in Kazakhstan announced today (Friday) the arrest of the five officials, a day after the Ministry of Defense reported the deaths of 14 military personnel who were swept away by the waves during a naval exercise in the Mangystau region in the west of the country, overlooking the Caspian Sea.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared September 25 a day of mourning, expressing his condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers and ordering authorities to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
According to the Kazakh Ministry of Defense, the soldiers were disembarking from the military ship "Kaisar" in waters one meter deep when strong winds swept them out to sea, coinciding with a sudden deterioration in weather conditions.
A government commission led by Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev is working at the site of the incident, while the public prosecutor's office announced that investigators have examined the location, interrogated more than 30 military personnel, and seized documents and video footage.
According to the preliminary findings of the investigation, it is suspected that officials failed to take the necessary measures to ensure the safety of personnel as weather conditions deteriorated, prompting authorities to detain the five officials.
The tragedy has brought to light a previous deadly incident that occurred during military exercises in the Caspian Sea; in 2015, four soldiers died during exercises near Aktau when strong winds and waves caused four armored personnel carriers to be submerged in water.
