Southern Lebanon witnessed a new field escalation today (Friday), with movements of Israeli forces and artillery shelling targeting several towns, coinciding with the Lebanese army reinforcing its deployment and requesting support from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to contain the tension.
The Israeli army fired six sound bombs around the point where its forces were stationed at the internal entrance of the town of Deir Mimas, coinciding with the arrival of reinforcements from the Lebanese army to the vicinity of the town, after an Israeli force advanced in the morning towards its outskirts, reaching an intersection near a newly established point for the Lebanese army.
The Lebanese army command deployed military reinforcements and vehicles to Deir Mimas from the nearby Burj al-Muluk area, while a UNIFIL force arrived at the site to work on containing the incident and preventing the escalation of tension.
Earlier, Israeli special forces entered the towns of Haddatha and Haris in the border district of Bint Jbeil, establishing military checkpoints and conducting search operations for members of Hezbollah, while Israeli movements were observed in other areas of the central and western sectors of southern Lebanon.
The Israeli artillery shelling targeted the towns of Al-Mansouri, Majdel Zoun, and Shuqra, in addition to Wadi al-Aziya and Wadi Nahle at the outskirts of Shuqra, while Israeli vehicles advanced towards the outskirts of the town of Haddatha.
These developments come amid a relative decrease in hostilities in Lebanon since late June, following the Iranian-American memorandum of understanding and the framework agreement between the Lebanese and Israeli governments. However, Israel continued to carry out strikes and demolition operations against homes in southern areas.
In Beirut, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun discussed the general situation with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, particularly the developments in the south and the ongoing Israeli assaults on southern villages and towns. Aoun also reviewed the outcomes of his meetings in Paris, the preparations for the international conference to support the army and internal security forces, as well as the agenda for the United Nations General Assembly meetings and the upcoming meeting in Washington to discuss the Lebanese situation.
