My wife passed away after a long struggle with the illness that exhausted her body and weighed down her days. I felt her pain and wished I could carry some of it for her, and it pained me to see her tired and to see the fear for her children in her eyes, while I stood helpless before a disease I could not fight. One of the hardest things a person can go through is to see a loved one in pain and be unable to do anything for them.
The last hours of her life are still present in my memory; I remember my fear and confusion and my attempts to hold it together, as if I sensed that something painful was approaching and I didn't want to believe it. Then came the moment I didn't want, she left. At that moment, I felt that everything around me had changed; I no longer knew what to do, nor how to explain to my children that their mother would not return, nor how to go back to the house where she had been just hours before and find it empty of her. In one moment, I transitioned from a life I had grown accustomed to for more than forty years to a new life I did not choose.
We lived together, joys and sorrows, differences and agreements, exhaustion and comfort, and small and big moments that shaped our lives. As the years go by, the presence of the person who lived with you through all these details becomes a part of your day, to the point where you cannot imagine life without them.
After her departure, I found myself facing the responsibility of my children. I tried to hold it together in front of them and to be strong so as not to increase their sadness, but the truth is that I was not as strong as I appeared. I looked at their faces and saw their mother in them, and I felt that each of us was trying to hide our sorrow from the other.
A person may learn over time how to live with loss, but they do not learn how to forget those they loved, for forgetting is not the solution, and perhaps it is not even required. Some people deserve to have their memories remain with us, to be remembered fondly, and for our longing for them to turn into prayers.
My lifelong companion has departed, but she left behind something greater than absence; she left children who carry her memory, a home that witnessed the years of her life, endless memories, and a heart that will remain loyal to her for as long as I live. I will ensure that her story remains beautiful in the hearts of our children, and that they remember their mother for the love, patience, and tenderness she embodied, rather than her memory being solely associated with sadness. As for me, I will continue to remember her in my prayers, for after her departure, there is nothing more precious than praying for those I loved.
