After a full decade spent behind television screens and news broadcasts, one of the anchors did not expect that her professional end with her news channel would be written in the corridors of the newsroom, but rather in the courtrooms through a fierce legal battle that toppled the channel's management due to a "fatal administrative error."
The case that occupied the media community began when lawyers filed a lawsuit on behalf of the anchor, demanding a hefty compensation amounting to 40,581 Jordanian Dinars (approximately 57,235 US Dollars), for wrongful dismissal, notice, and overtime hours, in addition to end-of-service benefits, following her termination at the end of 2022.
The shocking surprise came from the "legal loophole" that ignited the case, as the Jordanian judiciary proved that the anchor's continued presentation of her programs after the expiration of her fixed-term contract (without any explicit objection from the channel) automatically transformed the contractual relationship into an open-ended contract. This transformation made the abrupt decision to dismiss her a complete "wrongful termination" that necessitated immediate compensation.
Despite the channel's success in refuting the anchor's claim of working 14 hours a day (as it turned out that her shifts did not exceed 8 hours), the court acknowledged her entitlement to compensation for an additional two hours for presenting her morning program, along with compensation for a period during which she was not registered for social security.
The Jordanian Court of Cassation concluded the dramatic chapters of the case by rejecting both parties' appeals and upholding its final ruling obligating the channel to pay 12,007 Dinars (approximately 16,935 US Dollars) as direct compensation, after the initial ruling had set it at 15,456 Jordanian Dinars (approximately 21,793 US Dollars), along with legal interest and expenses until full payment.
