48 people have died, and 182 cases of intoxication have been reported after consuming a locally made alcoholic drink suspected of being contaminated with the toxic substance methanol in Ondo State, southern Nigeria.
Ondo State's health commissioner, Banjie Ajaka, confirmed today (Thursday) that the cases were recorded in the Odigbo and Irele areas, while health and security authorities are still investigating to determine the source of the suspected substance.
48 Deaths
According to health authorities, the death toll recorded as of Wednesday, September 16, stands at 48, while the total number of cases received by medical facilities has reached 182.
About 100 people are receiving treatment, while some of the injured have been discharged from hospitals after their conditions improved.
Sudden Loss of Vision
Some of the affected individuals reported severe symptoms after consuming the drink, including sudden loss of vision.
Health authorities have warned that exposure to methanol can quickly lead to serious harm, including kidney failure, loss of vision, and brain damage, depending on the amount consumed.
15 Arrested
The Ondo State police announced the arrest of 15 individuals in connection with the incident, including a person suspected of being involved in the production of substances believed to contain methanol, while assisting the police in the investigations.
Authorities are working to identify the source of the drink and the suspected toxic substance, in collaboration with several health and security agencies to prevent further cases.
Investigation Ongoing
Local residents suspect that the cases are linked to a locally made herbal alcoholic drink, but authorities have not definitively stated that this particular drink is the source of all the poisoning cases.
Relevant authorities continue to test samples and investigate the source of the suspected substance, while tightening measures to limit the spread of unregulated beverages.
