The Kingdom celebrates World Patient Safety Day 2026, which falls on September 17 each year, under the slogan "Safe Care for a Lifetime," amidst national health indicators reflecting the evolution of care quality, prevention, and beneficiary safety. Notably, there has been a 40% reduction in deaths related to chronic diseases, an increase in life expectancy from 74 years to 79.7 years, and the health services quality index reached 70.4% in 2025, surpassing the overall target of 60%.
These indicators reflect the impact of the transformation taking place in the health system in the Kingdom, moving towards a model based on prevention before treatment, early detection, improving the quality and safety of care, and empowering beneficiaries to participate in decisions related to their health, contributing to achieving the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Health Sector Transformation Program, as well as enhancing quality of life.
This year's World Patient Safety Day focuses on the safety of care provided to patients with non-communicable diseases throughout various stages of the beneficiary's journey; starting from prevention, early screening, and diagnosis, through treatment and follow-up, to long-term care and self-care; thereby enhancing continuity of care and reducing avoidable risks and harm.
The Kingdom's participation in this occasion extends the national efforts aimed at making patient safety a fundamental pillar in the quality of healthcare, enhancing integration among various components of the system and government and community sectors, and establishing the concept that patient safety is a shared responsibility that begins with the health system and extends to the individual, family, and community.
In line with its national role, the Saudi Patient Safety Center leads a number of initiatives and awareness and educational programs in partnership with relevant entities; aiming to expand the concept of patient safety from practice within healthcare facilities to a sustainable community culture, where the patient and their family are active partners in the care journey.
As part of this year's activities, the center, in collaboration with the National Center for E-Learning, is organizing a workshop titled "Co-designing Patient and Family Engagement in Treatment Plans," to enhance the partnership between beneficiaries, their families, and healthcare teams, and to involve them in designing services and improving the care experience.
The center is also holding the "Continuous Awareness Journey" event in the sports track in Riyadh, in collaboration with the sports track, Nobco "Nobco Care," and the Riyadh Club, through interactive, physical, and family activities that highlight the prevention of non-communicable diseases and the role of the individual and family in adopting healthy practices that contribute to safer care.
The celebration of this occasion extends to healthcare facilities and several sites and landmarks, through activating awareness messages and lighting up several buildings in orange, supporting the global message of patient safety and reinforcing the concept of "Safe Care for a Lifetime."
Dr. Ali bin Talal Asiri, the Director General of the Saudi Patient Safety Center, emphasized that patient safety represents a fundamental element in building a high-quality health system, noting that dealing with non-communicable diseases requires continuous and integrated care that accompanies the beneficiary throughout their life stages, placing prevention, early detection, and decision-making participation at the heart of the care journey.
He stated: "Patient safety is a shared responsibility that does not stop at the boundaries of the healthcare facility, but extends to the patient, family, community, and various relevant sectors. Strengthening this partnership reinforces a culture of safety and transforms it into a sustainable practice that contributes to improving health outcomes and quality of life."
The Saudi Patient Safety Center continues its role in supporting practices that reduce avoidable harm, enhancing the participation of patients and their families, and promoting a culture of safety, in support of the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 in building a more efficient and sustainable health system, focused on prevention, quality of care, and improving the beneficiary experience.
