In an unusual attempt to escape the police's grasp, a Brazilian man wanted in connection with a series of murders resorted to completely altering his appearance. He donned women's clothing, wore a wig, and carried a small child, hoping to succeed in bypassing the security blockade. However, his plan ended with his arrest and the opening of investigations that may reveal his connection to a large number of crimes.
The police in Paraíba state, northeastern Brazil, arrested Jorlan Lopes da Silva, 33, following a security operation involving multiple agencies to track him down, amid suspicions of his involvement in a series of murders that have occurred in the area over the past few months.
After his arrest, the suspect made statements that piqued the investigators' interest, claiming responsibility for the murder of around 80 people throughout his life. Authorities have not yet verified this number, while they began reviewing his statements and comparing them with crime files and available evidence.
Current investigations focus on 16 murders that took place within a period of no more than three months in the Mamanguape Valley area of Paraíba, with police stating they have evidence linking the suspect to several of these incidents.
According to Brazilian media, Lopes da Silva admitted during interrogation to committing 11 murders and stated that he began committing crimes when he was thirteen years old.
At the same time, authorities are verifying the validity of his claim regarding the larger number, as police do not consider his account of around 80 murders to be a confirmed fact before matching his statements with ongoing investigations, forensic evidence, and murder records.
Authorities are also exploring potential connections between him and a criminal group active in the area. While the suspect denied belonging to any criminal faction, he claimed that some of the crimes occurred in the context of what he described as a "personal war" against individuals he said threatened him and his family.
Complete Disguise at the Moment of Escape
The most bizarre detail of the escape attempt relates to the way the suspect tried to mislead security personnel while they were searching for him in the town of Molongu,
as he wore a women's dress, put on a wig, along with dark glasses, painted nails, and women's shoes, in an attempt to change his appearance and prevent the police from recognizing him.
He did not stop there; he carried a child about two years old while moving around the area, seemingly trying to enhance his new look and divert suspicion away from himself.
However, investigations later revealed that the child was not his son and had no familial relation to him, prompting authorities to open a separate investigation to determine how the child came to be with him and the circumstances of his presence during the escape attempt.
The plan ended when part of the man's clothing shifted during his movement, revealing a tattoo on his body that caught the attention of security personnel and helped them confirm his identity, leading to his arrest.
His apprehension followed a lengthy security chase, involving both civil and military police, intelligence agencies, and information provided by the federal highway police.
