The Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi headed today, Friday, to the Indian capital New Delhi to lead Egypt's delegation at the 18th BRICS summit, hosted by India on September 12 and 13, with the participation of the leaders of the member states and their partners.
The summit carries the slogan "Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability," while Egypt's participation marks the third consecutive year since its membership in BRICS in January 2024, at a time when the group continues to expand its presence on the international stage and enhance cooperation among its members in economic, political, and technological fields.
Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy, the official spokesperson for the Presidency, stated that President El-Sisi will deliver Egypt's speech during the closed session of BRICS leaders on September 12, and will participate the following day in the expanded session that includes member states and partners.
It is scheduled that the Egyptian president will hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit with several leaders of BRICS countries and senior officials of international organizations, as part of efforts aimed at strengthening Egypt's relations with the economic and political powers within the group, as well as discussing regional and international issues of mutual interest.
Expansion of BRICS
The summit gains special importance in light of the expansion of BRICS and its transformation into a platform that includes economic and political powers from different regions of the world, as the group currently comprises 11 countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, while other countries participate alongside it as partners.
The summit will discuss issues that go beyond traditional economic cooperation, including enhancing multilateral governance, energy and food security, technological cooperation, supply chains, as well as addressing the repercussions of crises and conflicts that are reshaping the map of the international economy and politics.
Enhancing Financial Cooperation Among BRICS Countries
The agenda of BRICS also highlights the issue of developing payment mechanisms and financial cooperation among member states, as India pushes for enhancing the linkage between central bank digital currencies to facilitate cross-border payments, in a move that reflects the group's efforts to reduce reliance on traditional financial structures and enhance trade among its members.
Egypt's participation in the summit comes amid its efforts to expand its economic and investment partnerships with BRICS countries and benefit from the group's mechanisms, including the New Development Bank, alongside strengthening its presence in platforms that shape the features of the multipolar international system.
The importance of Egypt's participation is also underscored by Cairo's geographical position and its role in energy, food, trade, and supply chain security issues, which are gaining increasing weight within BRICS amid disruptions in global trade routes and rising tensions in strategic areas, including the Middle East and international energy corridors.
