The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) denied today (Wednesday) the Iranian claims of targeting two U.S. Navy destroyers, describing the allegation as "false."
In a statement, CENTCOM said that the claims made by the Revolutionary Guard Corps, which announced that it struck two U.S. Navy destroyers operating in the Middle East, are "completely false."
It added: No U.S. warship has been struck; all attacks carried out by the Revolutionary Guard have failed, noting that U.S. forces successfully destroyed 10 Iranian tankers just last week. The statement indicated that the Iranian ships destroyed by the U.S. military were part of a multi-billion dollar shadow network funding the Revolutionary Guard, which Iran cannot defend.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard had stated earlier today that it targeted two U.S. destroyers equipped with cruise missiles and Aegis systems with ballistic missiles, causing significant damage, explaining that the targeting was in response to U.S. aggressive actions against Iranian oil tankers and ships. It indicated that the response to the United States would continue until the assaults cease.
For its part, the Wall Street Journal reported that Iran is facing increasing economic pressure due to the U.S. maritime blockade and a decline in its oil exports to China, threatening one of Tehran's most important sources of income. It clarified that despite the rising pressures, officials and analysts do not expect the economic crisis to push Iran to make concessions in negotiations. The United States imposed 36 new sanctions related to Iran on the aviation sector and other companies yesterday, as part of a broad campaign to escalate economic pressure on Tehran as the war in the Middle East enters its seventh month.
The U.S. Treasury Department stated that the action aims to stop the Iranian airline "Mahan Air," which has previously been sanctioned by the U.S. and the European Union, in addition to expanding sanctions to include all other Iranian airlines. The sanctions also targeted so-called "front companies," shipment handling companies, foreign intermediaries, and deceptive shipping routes that Washington claims Iran relies on to obtain aircraft and sensitive technology of U.S. origin.
