Russian President Vladimir Putin has put Armenia in a position to choose between applying for membership in the European Union and continuing its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union.
During his meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of a summit in Kyrgyzstan, Putin stated that Yerevan's accession to the European Union "undoubtedly creates difficulties in maintaining its status within the Eurasian Economic Union," reiterating his call for Armenia to put the issue of joining the European bloc to a referendum "as soon as possible."
Dispute over the referendum
For his part, Pashinyan said that the law passed last year, which officially declares Armenia's intention to apply for EU membership, made a referendum unnecessary.
He added that it is too early to talk about Armenia's exit from the Eurasian Economic Union.
Putin: The decision means a practical withdrawal
Putin responded that the adoption of a law initiating procedures for joining another economic organization is, in practical terms, a declaration of withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union.
He added that Moscow will have to adjust its trade and economic policies in line with these potential decisions.
Tense discussion between the two sides
Media reports indicated that the meeting witnessed a tense discussion regarding Yerevan's desire to apply for EU membership, a step that Moscow considers contradictory to membership in the Eurasian Economic Union, which includes countries from the former Soviet Union.
First meeting after the elections
The meeting between Putin and Pashinyan is the first since the elections held in Armenia last June, which confirmed this Caucasian country's shift towards the West.
