The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, announced that he intends to increase the number of Russian entities subject to sanctions by one-third.
The bloc has imposed 21 packages of sanctions against Russia since it launched its large-scale military attack on Ukraine in February 2022.
The German newspaper "Die Welt" quoted Borrell as saying, "In the fall, I will present a new sanctions list that will be the broadest since the beginning of the war." He confirmed that "once adopted, the total number of Russian entities subject to sanctions will increase by one-third."
He added, "Pressure must continue to increase until Moscow ends its war." Borrell did not provide further details regarding the new sanctions package.
These statements come after weeks of the EU adopting a softened sanctions package, which was approved after prolonged negotiations among member states, with some countries objecting to the stricter points. The sanctions currently include 3,000 individuals and entities according to the European Commission, and Borrell asserts that they have deprived the Russian war machine of more than one trillion euros.
The European Union approved its latest sanctions package against Russia in July due to its war in Ukraine, imposing restrictions on the banking sector and cryptocurrency networks in the country.
