Due to her marriage to a Korean man, Egyptian content creator Israa Gamal El-Sakka, residing in South Korea, has issued an urgent appeal to the Egyptian Minister of Interior requesting legal protection after being subjected to a campaign of slander, defamation, and the use of her personal images to harm her through social media.
Israa states that her crisis began with insults directed at her and her late father, before escalating - according to her account - to the publication of her private photos aimed at damaging her reputation due to her sharing details of her daily life with her Korean husband. She indicates that she has received messages containing direct threats and offensive phrases, which have caused her significant anxiety and fears for her safety and that of her family, considering that she is facing a campaign of online harassment.
She clarifies that her marriage to a Korean citizen named (Ryan), who converted to Islam before their marriage, does not diminish her rights as an Egyptian citizen, nor does it justify - in her words - the attacks against her or doubts about her belonging, asserting that she has not disrespected her country or Egyptian men.
Israa has requested guidance from the Ministry of Interior on a formal and safe way to file complaints and provide evidence, given her residence outside Egypt, emphasizing her desire to submit the messages, photos, and electronic materials in her possession to the relevant authorities, and her confidence in their ability to investigate the incident and take necessary legal action. She also affirmed her commitment to her rights and those of her daughters who hold Egyptian nationality, demanding protection from any threats or abuses online.
This appeal comes at a time of widespread debate on social media regarding the marriages of some Egyptian women to Asian men, along with the social and legal discussions related to these marriages, amid circulating claims about the costs of marriage in some Asian countries compared to cross-border marriages. Israa asserts that her marriage and residence in South Korea do not justify - according to her account - the attacks against her or the use of her images to harm her, calling for an investigation into the incidents she has presented.
