فيما تضغط دكا على نيودلهي لتسليم رئيسة الوزراء السابقة الشيخة حسينة وشخصيات أخرى فرت من البلاد، ربطت حكومة بنغلاديش اليوم (الأحد) زيارة وفدٍ عالي المستوى إلى الهند بتوفير الظروف الدبلوماسية الأكثر ملاءمة قبل أن توافق على إجراء الزيارة.
وقال المتحدث باسم وزارة الخارجية في بنغلاديش إن الزيارة لا تزال قيد المناقشة، مضيفاً: «يجب توفير ظروف مواتية للزيارة». وأشار إلى أن بلاده حثّت الهند على الاستجابة لطلبها بتسليم حسينة، في إطار الجهود المبذولة لحل القضايا العالقة، وأضاف المتحدث: «ننتظر ردهم».
وكان رئيس وزراء بنغلاديش طارق رحمن قد قال الأسبوع الماضي، إن هناك حاجة إلى ظروف مواتية لتعزيز العلاقات.
وتدهورت العلاقات بين الجارتين في 2024 عندما فرت رئيسة وزراء بنغلاديش آنذاك حسينة إلى الهند في ذروة الانتفاضة ضد حكومتها.
وتجري الدولتان محادثات منذ أسابيع حول زيارة محتملة لرئيس وزراء بنغلاديش طارق رحمن إلى الهند في محاولة لإصلاح العلاقات. في المقابل، قالت نيودلهي إنها تدرس طلبات بنغلاديش وفق إجراءاتها القانونية.
وكانت محكمة بنغلاديشية قد أصدرت حكماً في نوفمبر العام الماضي قضى بإعدام حسينة غيابياً، بتهمة إصدار أوامر بشن حملة قمع انتفاضة طلابية، وهي الحملة التي تخللها سقوط ضحايا، لكن حسينة نفت التهم الموجهة إليها ووصفتها بأنها ذات دوافع سياسية.
وكانت حسينة قد قالت للصحفيين في مطلع الشهر الجاري إنه يجب إلغاء حظر حزبها «رابطة عوامي»، مبينة أنها ستعود إلى بلادها في ديسمبر، وهو ما اعتبرته وزارة الخارجية في بنغلاديش إساءة إلى سيادة البلاد، ونددت بالسماح لها بالإدلاء بمثل هذا البيان العلني.
As Dhaka pressures New Delhi to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other figures who fled the country, the Bangladeshi government today (Sunday) linked a high-level delegation's visit to India to the provision of more favorable diplomatic conditions before agreeing to conduct the visit.
The spokesperson for the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry stated that the visit is still under discussion, adding, "Favorable conditions must be provided for the visit." He noted that his country has urged India to respond to its request for the extradition of Hasina, as part of efforts to resolve outstanding issues, and added, "We are waiting for their response."
Last week, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tariq Rahman stated that favorable conditions are needed to enhance relations.
Relations between the two neighbors deteriorated in 2024 when then-Prime Minister Hasina fled to India amid a surge of protests against her government.
The two countries have been in talks for weeks regarding a potential visit by Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tariq Rahman to India in an attempt to mend relations. In return, New Delhi stated that it is considering Bangladesh's requests according to its legal procedures.
A Bangladeshi court had issued a judgment in November of last year sentencing Hasina to death in absentia, on charges of ordering a crackdown on a student uprising, a campaign that resulted in casualties; however, Hasina denied the allegations against her and described them as politically motivated.
Hasina had told reporters earlier this month that the ban on her party, the "Awami League," should be lifted, indicating that she would return to her country in December, which the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry considered an affront to the country's sovereignty and condemned the allowance of her making such a public statement.
