American officials have suggested that President Donald Trump may extend the ceasefire with Iran if Tehran succeeds in curbing its nuclear program and fully resumes shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Overcoming the Diplomatic Crisis
The Wall Street Journal reported that officials stated: Washington is expected to lift the maritime blockade imposed on Iran if Tehran fully reopens the strait to shipping traffic.
Officials indicated that Trump is patient and is likely to overcome the current diplomatic crisis despite the stalled negotiations between the two sides.
These developments come amid disagreements over the conditions for reopening the strait, with Tehran insisting on demands related to lifting the blockade, withdrawing U.S. forces, and ending sanctions, while Washington refuses to impose Iranian restrictions on the movement of ships.
Strengthening the Negotiating Position
Iran has indirectly acknowledged politicizing the Hormuz issue and using it to exert pressure and strengthen its position during negotiations, forcing the United States to accept its terms.
Brigadier General Hossein Salami, a spokesperson for the Revolutionary Guard, claimed today (Sunday) that the Strait of Hormuz has become part of the geography of confrontation for his country, not just a waterway.
He added that Iran's strategy lies in "maintaining control over the strait until all its conditions are accepted," as he put it. He claimed that Iran has forced America to quickly abandon all its goals and seek to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian media reports.
Iran reported on Saturday that reaching an agreement with Oman regarding control over the Strait of Hormuz is close, but it will not be sufficient to reopen the waterway. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that his country and Oman are "very close" to reaching an agreement on a new shipping route through Hormuz, but he noted that reopening the strait depends on other conditions, including U.S. compensation to his country.
Lifting the Blockade and Sanctions
For his part, Secretary General of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, stated that there are other demands, including ending U.S. threats targeting his country and stopping attacks on it and its allies in Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, Yemen, and Iraq, lifting the blockade and sanctions imposed on Tehran, and releasing Iranian assets.
An anonymous U.S. official announced last Friday that Washington expects to soon reach an agreement between Iran and Oman to allow the resumption of oil transport in a normal manner, according to Reuters.
Previously, an Iranian source and officials in the region told Reuters (on Wednesday) that a proposed agreement between Iran and Oman to help end the five-month war between Tehran and the United States would grant Tehran control over the ships entering the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, in one of the largest concessions offered to Iran so far. However, U.S. officials confirmed that they would never agree to allow Iran to control shipping traffic in the world's most important trade route for energy supplies.
