قُتل 15 سجينا على الأقل و4 حراس خلال أعمال شغب، مساء أمس (الأحد)، في سجن يقع على مشارف العاصمة السريلانكية كولومبو، بحسب ما أعلن مصدر طبي، اليوم (الإثنين).
ونقلت وكالة «فرانس برس» عن مديرة مستشفى نيغومبو بوشبا غاملات قولها: إن أكثر من 100 سجين آخرين نُقلوا إلى المستشفى عقب أعمال الشغب. وأضافت غاملات أن «بعض الضحايا أصيبوا بأعيرة نارية».
وأفادت السلطات في سريلانكا بأن الأحداث بدأت مساء الأحد عندما اشتبكت مجموعتان من السجناء وُصفتا بأنهما عصابتان متنافستان لتهريب المخدرات، داخل المنشأة التي تضم نحو 10 آلاف سجين.
وقال شرطي لوكالة فرانس برس، طالبا عدم الكشف عن هويته، إن الوضع خرج تماما عن السيطرة، وقُتل أربعة حراس أثناء محاولتهم السيطرة على أعمال الشغب.
واستدعيت وحدات من القوات الخاصة التابعة للشرطة كتعزيزات لكنها لم تدخل حرم السجن، في حين تجمع العديد من أفراد عائلات السجناء خارج المنشأة.
يذكر أنه في شهر ديسمبر من العام 2020، أسفر تمرد داخل أحد السجون في سريلانكا خلال جائحة كوفيد عن مقتل 11 شخصا وإصابة 117 آخرين، ما دفع الحكومة آنذاك إلى الإفراج عن مئات السجناء.
وبحسب إحصاءات رسمية، بلغ عدد السجناء في سريلانكا 41250، ما يعادل أربعة أضعاف الطاقة الاستيعابية للسجون.
At least 15 inmates and 4 guards were killed during riots last night (Sunday) in a prison located on the outskirts of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, according to a medical source announced today (Monday).
The French news agency reported that the director of Negombo Hospital, Pushpa Gamalath, stated that more than 100 other inmates were transferred to the hospital following the riots. Gamalath added that "some of the victims were injured by gunfire."
Sri Lankan authorities reported that the events began on Sunday evening when two groups of inmates, described as rival drug trafficking gangs, clashed inside the facility, which houses around 10,000 inmates.
A police officer told the French news agency, requesting anonymity, that the situation completely spiraled out of control, and four guards were killed while trying to regain control of the riots.
Special police units were called in as reinforcements but did not enter the prison grounds, while many family members of the inmates gathered outside the facility.
It is worth mentioning that in December 2020, a rebellion inside one of the prisons in Sri Lanka during the COVID pandemic resulted in the deaths of 11 people and injuries to 117 others, prompting the government at that time to release hundreds of inmates.
According to official statistics, the number of inmates in Sri Lanka reached 41,250, which is four times the prison capacity.
