Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced today (Saturday) his intention to resign within weeks and to hold early presidential and parliamentary elections.

Vučić stated in front of his supporters during a government support rally in the capital Belgrade: “I will remain president for just a few weeks, then I will resign,” explaining that he would help his party (the Serbian Progressive Party) win the elections, including the early parliamentary elections, which were scheduled to take place in 2027.

The Serbian president did not specify the date of his resignation or the date for dissolving the parliament, which is a prerequisite for holding early parliamentary elections.

This announcement comes after a year and a half of anti-corruption protests led by students that swept the country following the collapse of a canopy at a railway station in the city of Novi Sad in northern Serbia, resulting in the deaths of 16 people.

A few days ago, students in the city of Novi Sad organized events to commemorate the victims of the 2024 incident, demanding early general elections.

The populist Serbian president's second (and final) term ends in mid-2027.

During the protests in the capital Belgrade, demonstrators, the opposition, and human rights groups stated that the railway station disaster reflects the government's mismanagement of construction projects and is an indicator of widespread corruption.

Activists in the student movement confirmed that they are seeking to challenge Vučić and the Serbian Progressive Party in the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.

Protesters opposing the government are calling for early elections and an end to President Aleksandar Vučić's rule.
