The American city of Chicago witnessed a shooting incident inside one of its hospitals, resulting in the death of a police officer and the critical injury of another, after a detainee managed to obtain a weapon and opened fire before fleeing.

Details of the incident inside the hospital

The police reported that the suspect, who was detained in connection with a theft case, was transferred on Saturday morning to Swedish "Endeavor Health" hospital for treatment, where he underwent security screening using metal detection tools and was under strict security escort.

According to a statement from the hospital, the suspect later managed to obtain a firearm inside the facility and began shooting at the accompanying officers, resulting in injuries to two police officers, one of whom was later pronounced dead at the hospital, while the other was transported in critical condition and is "fighting for his life."

Brief escape and ending with a raid

The suspect was able to flee the scene of the incident before barricading himself inside a private home several blocks away, where he was surrounded by police forces and SWAT units, and was arrested shortly thereafter.

The authorities announced the recovery of a firearm at the scene of the incident, in addition to finding a "third weapon" during the raid, while investigations are still ongoing to determine how the suspect obtained the weapon despite the security screening procedures.

Hospital closure and ongoing investigations

Following the incident, the hospital administration imposed a complete lockdown on the facility, confirming that there was no active threat and that all patients and staff were safe, while security agencies continue their investigations into the circumstances of the incident.

Victims of duty... and official messages

Chicago Police Chief Larry Snelling revealed that the deceased officer was 38 years old and had served in the police force for 10 years, while the injured officer is 57 years old and has 21 years of service.

Snelling described the incident as "a senseless loss of a life of an officer who was performing his duty to protect the city," noting that "these risks are part of the nature of police work."

For his part, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson described the incident as a "tragedy," expressing his gratitude to the police officers for their daily efforts in protecting the community.
