The Supreme Committee for the People's Council Elections in Syria announced today (Monday) the preliminary results of the elections in the electoral districts across all provinces. The committee reported the victory of 30 candidates in the city of Aleppo and its countryside, 10 candidates from the Damascus province, and 12 candidates from the Rural Damascus province. In Idlib province and its countryside, 12 individuals obtained membership in the People's Council. Twelve candidates won from the districts of the city of Homs and its countryside, and 12 candidates secured membership in the council from Hama province and its countryside, in addition to 12 winners from the provinces of Latakia and Tartus. Six candidates won from Daraa province and its countryside, while three candidates obtained council membership in Quneitra province, and 10 candidates from Deir ez-Zor province and its countryside. The polling places were determined in most provinces, except for Raqqa, Hasakah, and Sweida, where the committee decided at the end of August to postpone the electoral process until suitable conditions and a safe environment are available for conducting it.
And
The Syrian Supreme Election Committee will hold a meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) to establish a mechanism for conducting elections in the remaining 12 districts, noting that coordination is ongoing with local community representatives to ensure the integrity and transparency of the electoral process.
Mohammad Taha Ahmad, the head of the Supreme Committee for the People's Council Elections, revealed to the Syrian News Agency today (Monday) that there are pressures from the residents of the areas where the electoral process did not take place. He stated that the committee has not received a response from some entities outside the control of the Syrian state. He explained that President Ahmad al-Shara will focus on appointing technocrats and competencies in the People's Council and addressing the gaps, referring to the third that the head of state will appoint according to the constitutional declaration. Ahmad spoke about a plan to fill the void, emphasizing the state's desire for the first session of the new parliament to include all components of the Syrian people.
The process of selecting the first parliament in Syria, following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime, concluded yesterday (Sunday). The spokesperson for the Supreme Committee, Nawar Najma, announced that "the voting operations have ended in all Syrian provinces."
About 6,000 people participated in the process of selecting the deputies, after more than 1,500 candidates competed, only 14% of whom were women, for membership in the council, which will have a renewable term of 30 months, according to the Supreme Election Committee.
The upcoming parliament is set to be formed based on a mechanism defined by the constitutional declaration and not through direct elections by the people, as regional bodies formed by a Supreme Committee elected two-thirds of the council's members, totaling 210, while the Syrian president will appoint the remaining third.
The selection of council members in the provinces of Sweida, Raqqa (in the north), and Hasakah (in the northeast) was postponed due to "security challenges," as announced by the election committee earlier.
