In an unprecedented security move, Denmark announced a complete ban on all civilian drone flights across the country from Monday to Friday, to ensure the security of the European Union summit being hosted in Copenhagen this week.
This ban comes after a wave of alarming sightings of unknown drones over civilian airports and military bases, which led to the temporary closure of Copenhagen Airport and other airports, affecting tens of thousands of travelers.

As European leaders arrive in the Danish capital to discuss defense and support for Ukraine, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed that "the security situation is difficult at the moment," emphasizing the need to provide the best conditions for the armed forces and police to protect "Danes and our guests."
Tensions have been escalating since September 22, when sightings of unidentified drones forced the closure of Copenhagen Airport for more than four hours, resulting in the cancellation of hundreds of flights. Last weekend, new incidents were recorded over military bases in multiple areas, including a civilian-military airport that was closed for two consecutive nights.
According to the Danish Ministry of Transport, the ban aims to "eliminate the risk of confusion between hostile and civilian drones," with fines of up to 10,000 euros imposed on violators. At the same time, the German warship "FSG Hamburg" arrived in Copenhagen Harbor to enhance airspace monitoring, while Sweden promised to provide counter-drone military capabilities, and France offered a team of 35 experts and a specialized helicopter.
Coordination of European Summit Meetings
Denmark currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union for the second half of 2025, making it responsible for coordinating the European summit meetings that will take place on Wednesday and Thursday in Copenhagen, to discuss enhancing military readiness and supporting Ukraine in its ongoing crisis with Russia since 2022.
This will be followed by the European Political Community summit on Thursday, which includes 47 European countries and friendly nations such as the United Kingdom, to strengthen European unity against external threats. These summits come in the context of rising security tensions in Northern Europe, where the Russian-Ukrainian war has led to increased suspicious air activity, including drone incursions into the airspace of Poland and Estonia, prompting NATO to enhance "heightened vigilance" in the Baltic Sea region.
These incidents are considered part of the "hybrid attacks" that Russia is accused of carrying out, including the use of drones for reconnaissance or terrorism, as seen in previous incidents that led to airport closures in Sweden and Norway.
According to NATO reports, the region has recorded more than 20 incidents of Russian incursions in recent weeks, including Russian fighter jets entering Estonian airspace. Moscow has denied any involvement, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the accusations as "unjustified," but affirmed that "there is a major state threatening Europe's security, which is Russia."
