The regional police chief, Ahmed Jibiehu, reported to the state news agency "Fana" that "the death toll has reached 36 and may rise further," adding that more than 200 injured individuals were transported to hospitals in the capital Addis Ababa for emergency treatment, including children and the elderly.

A local official described the situation as "tragic," noting that some people are still trapped under the debris, without additional details on rescue efforts, while images and videos showed chaos from the collapsed wooden columns, with crowds gathering around the dense wreckage, while other images depicted the outer surroundings of the church where the scaffold was built in an unstable manner.
The Ethiopian government expressed its "deep condolences" in an official statement, warning of the need to "prioritize safety" in construction and renovation work, amid fears that the toll may rise as rescue operations continue with the help of the Ethiopian Red Cross.
The Ethiopian Orthodox churches, followed by about 44% of the Ethiopian population, are an essential part of the cultural and social identity, especially in the Amhara region, which includes historic rock-hewn churches like those in Lalibela.
The incident has sparked a wave of national mourning, as churches in Amhara temporarily closed their doors to pray for the victims, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church announced a "Day of Mourning" next Sunday.
