بعد تصاعد حدة التوتر بين الولايات المتحدة وفنزويلا خلال الأسابيع الأخيرة، عقب تعزيز واشنطن وجودها العسكري قرب السواحل الفنزويلية، أعلن الرئيس الفنزويلي نيكولاس مادورو حالة الطوارئ تحسبا لأي تهديد أمريكي محتمل، في وقت تشير المعارضة المدعومة من واشنطن إلى خطط للإطاحة بمادورو خلال «أول 100 ساعة» في حال تدخل أمريكي.
ولم تعد الأزمة بين كاراكاس وواشنطن مجرد خلاف حول مكافحة المخدرات، بل تحولت إلى جبهة مواجهة جديدة بين المعسكرين الغربي (بقيادة أمريكا) والشرقي (بقيادة روسيا والصين).
ويرى خبراء أن واشنطن قد تكتفي بضربات محدودة للضغط، لتجنب تصعيد عسكري مباشر قد يفتح المجال لتدخل روسي وصيني في المنطقة.
ويأتي التحشيد الأمريكي في الكاريبي ضمن خطط معلنة لمواجهة مهربي المخدرات، لكن حكومة مادورو رأت فيها محاولة للضغط عليها.
وشهدت الأسابيع الماضية قيام الولايات المتحدة بتدمير ثلاثة زوارق على الأقل في منطقة الكاريبي، بتهمة تهريب المخدرات، فيما سعى مادورو إلى فتح صفحة جديدة مع الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، إذ بعث له رسالة دعا فيها إلى بدء محادثات مباشرة.
After the escalation of tensions between the United States and Venezuela in recent weeks, following Washington's reinforcement of its military presence near Venezuelan shores, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro declared a state of emergency in anticipation of any potential American threat, while the opposition backed by Washington pointed to plans to overthrow Maduro within the "first 100 hours" in the event of American intervention.
The crisis between Caracas and Washington has evolved from a mere disagreement over drug trafficking into a new front of confrontation between the Western camp (led by America) and the Eastern camp (led by Russia and China).
Experts believe that Washington may settle for limited strikes to apply pressure, in order to avoid direct military escalation that could open the door for Russian and Chinese intervention in the region.
The American mobilization in the Caribbean comes as part of announced plans to combat drug traffickers, but Maduro's government views it as an attempt to pressure them.
In recent weeks, the United States has destroyed at least three boats in the Caribbean region on charges of drug trafficking, while Maduro sought to turn a new page with President Donald Trump, sending him a message in which he called for the start of direct talks.
