In a controversial speech delivered by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth before hundreds of generals and fleet commanders at the Quantico Marine Base in Virginia today (Tuesday), he unveiled an ambitious plan to reform the U.S. military through 10 directives aimed at changing the military culture regarding fitness, race, and gender.
Hegseth's Warning to Leaders
Hegseth described the previous policies as a "Department of Wokeness," strongly criticizing the idea of "diversity as strength." He stated that he had dismissed generals such as Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Charles Q. Brown for their support of diversity and inclusion (DEI) policies, and warned leaders by saying, "If my speech bothers you, resign with honor," referring to the difficulty of changing a culture with leaders who contributed to it.
Hegseth and the Series of Dismissals
Hegseth, who recently took office, has dismissed several leaders, most of whom are Black or women, and announced a review of promotion policies to be "race and gender-neutral," emphasizing that merit will be the sole criterion.
He also called for reforming the Inspector General's office and the Equality Office to reduce "frivolous complaints," and launched a "no walking on eggshells" policy to remove minor infractions from leaders' records.
High Costs and Security Risks
The gathering, which brought together leaders from around the world without prior notice, faced criticism due to its cost and security risks, especially with a potential government shutdown looming.
Beard Ban and Strenuous Training for Women
Hegseth announced the return of fitness and appearance standards from 1990, banning beards except for special forces, and imposing uniform physical standards on women in combat, stating, "War does not distinguish between man and woman."
Shark Attack Drills
He also allowed sergeants to use profanity and conduct "shark attack" drills to instill "healthy fear" in recruits, promising to review the rules of engagement to enhance "lethal effectiveness" against enemies.
This comes as Hegseth dismissed military lawyers, assigning his personal attorney Tim Parlatore to reframe legal advice to support more aggressive tactics.
