شهد شاطئ لونغ ريف في سيدني بأستراليا، مأساة مروعة، إذ لقي ميرسيري بسيلياس، وهو أب يبلغ من العمر 57 عامًا، حتفه إثر هجوم قاتل من سمكة قرش كبيرة.
وقعت الحادثة على بعد حوالى 100 متر من الشاطئ أثناء تصفح بسيلياس للأمواج مع أصدقائه، في ثاني هجوم مميت لسمكة قرش في المدينة منذ عام 1963.
وهرعت خدمات الطوارئ إلى الموقع بعد الساعة 10 صباحًا بتوقيت سيدني، لكن بسيلياس، الذي فقد عدة أطراف في الهجوم، تُوفي في مكان الحادثة بعد فشل محاولات إنقاذه.

ووصف شهود عيان المشهد بالفوضوي، إذ ظهرت زعنفة سمكة القرش الضخمة، التي قُدر طولها بحوالى 6 أمتار بناءً على المسافة بين زعنفتيها الظهرية والذيلية.
وقال شاهد عيان لشبكة «سكاي نيوز أستراليا»: «كان الرجل يصرخ "لا تعضني"، ثم اختفى تحت الماء مع لوحه».
كان بسيلياس، وهو متزلج متمرس وأب لابنة صغيرة، شخصية معروفة في مجتمع الشواطئ الشمالية لبيع النباتات الغريبة النادرة عبر وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي.
إغلاق الشواطئ بين مانلي ونارابين لمدة 24 ساعة
وتعمل الشرطة حاليًا مع علماء الأحياء البحرية لتحليل جثته وأجزاء لوح التزلج لتحديد نوع سمكة القرش، بينما تستخدم الطائرات دون طيار ومروحية لمراقبة المياه بحثًا عن أي نشاط إضافي للأسماك القرشية.

The Long Reef beach in Sydney, Australia, witnessed a horrific tragedy, as Merceri Basylias, a 57-year-old father, lost his life following a fatal attack by a large shark.
The incident occurred about 100 meters from the shore while Basylias was surfing the waves with friends, marking the second deadly shark attack in the city since 1963.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after 10 AM Sydney time, but Basylias, who lost several limbs in the attack, died at the scene after attempts to save him failed.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, as the fin of the massive shark, estimated to be about 6 meters long based on the distance between its dorsal and tail fins, emerged.
An eyewitness told Sky News Australia: “The man was screaming 'Don’t bite me,' then he disappeared under the water with his board.”
Basylias, an experienced surfer and father of a young daughter, was a well-known figure in the northern beaches community for selling rare exotic plants through social media.
Closure of beaches between Manly and Narrabeen for 24 hours
The police are currently working with marine biologists to analyze his body and parts of the surfboard to determine the type of shark, while drones and a helicopter are being used to monitor the waters for any additional shark activity.
The incident has led to the closure of beaches between Manly and Narrabeen for at least 24 hours, with warnings for locals to avoid swimming or surfing.
North Beaches Police Chief John Duncan noted that such incidents are extremely rare, adding that it occurred on the eve of Father's Day in Australia, making the tragedy even more painful.
Shark attacks in Sydney
Shark attacks in Sydney are rare, with only one recorded fatality in 2022 when diving instructor Simon Nellist was killed by a great white shark, and the previous incident was in 1963 when actress Marcia Hathaway died due to a bull shark attack.
With the onset of spring, shark nets have been installed across 51 beaches in New South Wales, from Newcastle to Wollongong, as an annual precautionary measure; however, these incidents continue to spark debate over the effectiveness of these nets and the protection of marine life.
