Axios reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requested during a meeting with his American counterpart Donald Trump to supply his country with long-range, precision-guided Tomahawk missiles, considering that this would force Russian President Vladimir Putin to enter into peace talks to end the war that has been ongoing for nearly three years, according to what was conveyed by a Ukrainian official and another source familiar with the details of the meeting.

During an interview with The Axios Show, Zelensky stated that he asked Trump for an additional weapons system that could compel Putin to enter peace talks, perhaps without Ukraine even having to use it.

Zelensky refused to disclose the weapons system he requested during the television interview, but he mentioned that if Russia knew Ukraine possessed it, "the pressure on them to negotiate would significantly increase."

Zelensky had said last Wednesday that he asked the American president for an additional weapons system that could force Russian President Vladimir Putin to enter peace talks, without Ukraine even needing to use it.

Kyiv Requests, Washington Hesitates

Kyiv has previously requested Washington to supply it with Tomahawk missiles several times over the past year, as part of a list of equipment requested months ago, but the U.S. administration has remained hesitant so far.

The range of Tomahawk missiles, which are primarily used to strike ground targets with high precision from long distances, reaches about 1,600 kilometers or more, allowing them to be launched from safe distances outside the enemy's air defense range. These missiles utilize an advanced guidance system that combines GPS, digital maps, and radar, giving them the ability to hit targets with extreme accuracy.

These missiles can change their course during flight to avoid air defenses or to adjust their target, making them difficult to intercept.

This missile flies at a very low altitude, helping it to sneak under radar systems, and can be launched from warships, submarines, and aircraft as well (in some modified versions).

The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) is experiencing a shortage of these missiles, having spent $2.8 billion over the past ten years to purchase only 1,234 missiles.

Ukraine has attempted to circumvent its partners' reluctance to provide long-range weapons by developing its own systems, such as "Balyanitsa" and "Flamingo."

Observers have questioned whether these weapons, if delivered to Kyiv, would compel Moscow to return to the negotiating table?

President Trump had previously informed Kyiv that it should respond appropriately to Russian attacks on its territory, after having previously rejected the use of American weapons to strike inside Russia.
