Clashes erupted between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces on the fronts of Al-Ayara and Um Samima west of the city of Al-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state. The army launched a new attack today (Friday), inflicting significant losses on the Rapid Support Forces.
Military sources reported that the army managed to regain control of the areas of Al-Khawi, Um Samima, and Al-Ayara west of Al-Obeid. The sources noted that other battlefronts in the Kordofan region experienced a state of cautious calm.
For its part, the Dar Hamr Emergency Room announced that the Rapid Support Forces had turned the customs building in the city of Al-Nuhud into an unofficial detention center, where extensive detention campaigns are being carried out. It called on the international community and human rights organizations, led by the United Nations and the Security Council, to condemn these violations and take urgent action to stop them and open independent investigations into them.
It is noteworthy that the Rapid Support Forces have intensified their attacks in Darfur and Kordofan recently, after the army expelled its fighters from vital cities in central Sudan, including Khartoum, in the first half of this year. The Rapid Support Forces have made territorial advances in some cities of North and South Kordofan and strengthened their control in Darfur.
The Rapid Support Forces attempted to resume the siege that the army had broken on the city of Al-Obeid at the beginning of this year, which had persisted since the start of the war in 2023.
It is worth mentioning that last July, the city of Bara in North Kordofan witnessed one of the fiercest attacks by the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians in a series of assaults on neighboring villages. However, the army managed last week to take control of Bara, preventing the Rapid Support Forces from holding the road linking Khartoum and Darfur through Kordofan.
The Kordofan states, which cover a vast area of southern Sudan, contain oil fields, agricultural land, and routes for fuel smuggling.
