Trump described the operation as being based on his direct orders and that it was executed under the responsibility of the U.S. Southern Command, emphasizing that those involved, who were clearly identified as members of the "Tren de Aragua" gang, represented a "deadly weapon poisoning Americans."
In a statement posted on the "Truth Social" platform, Trump said: "The strike occurred while these confirmed terrorists from Venezuela were in international waters transporting illegal drugs heading to the United States. We killed 11 terrorists in the operation, and no American forces were harmed."
A Warning to Anyone Thinking of Smuggling Drugs into America
He added that this operation is "a warning to anyone thinking of smuggling drugs into America," noting that it is part of a broader campaign against "cartels" that his administration has classified as "foreign terrorist organizations."
According to U.S. officials, the strike was carried out by an MQ-9 Reaper drone or an attack helicopter after weeks of aerial surveillance, targeting a four-engine speedboat loaded with drugs, including suspected cocaine.
Increasing Tension
This announcement comes at a time of increasing tension between Washington and Caracas, with the Venezuelan government strongly condemning the operation, describing it as "imperialist aggression" aimed at overthrowing President Nicolás Maduro. In an official response, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil warned that "these criminal strikes will lead to American and Latin blood," calling for an international investigation.
This strike is the second in a matter of weeks, following an initial operation on September 2 that resulted in the deaths of 11 other traffickers in a similar strike against a boat linked to the "Tren de Aragua" gang. These operations are part of a secret directive signed by Trump in July, allowing the Pentagon to use military force against Latin American "cartels," particularly those linked to Venezuela, which Washington has accused of turning into a "narco-state."
The "Tren de Aragua" gang, which originated in a Venezuelan prison in 2012 and was classified by the Trump administration as a "foreign terrorist organization" in February, is accused of trafficking cocaine and fentanyl across the Caribbean, as well as human trafficking and murder, and is considered responsible for the increase in violent crime in the United States, according to reports from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
