The Sudanese army pledged today (Saturday) to lift the siege imposed by the Rapid Support Forces on the city of El Fasher in the Darfur region and the displaced persons' camps, confirming its success in halting the advance of those forces in the southern axis of the city.
A Sudanese military source explained that the army is determined to stop the threats posed by the Rapid Support Forces and eradicate them forever, noting that the Rapid Support Forces continue to shell the displaced persons' camps and villages, particularly on the outskirts of El Fasher.
Sudanese medical sources reported that most hospitals in El Fasher have become overwhelmed due to the repeated shelling by the Rapid Support Forces, indicating that there is significant pressure on the remaining hospitals and health centers.
The sources pointed out that 900,000 people are suffering from hunger due to the siege on El Fasher, explaining that Atbara Hospital received 6 dead and 9 injured yesterday as a result of a well collapse in the Al-Bawqa area in the Nile River state.
The humanitarian situation inside the city of El Fasher is deteriorating significantly under the imposed siege and the intensifying grip of hunger, along with artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces on civilian locations.
The United Nations fact-finding mission accused the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan yesterday of committing multiple crimes against humanity during their siege of the city of El Fasher in the Darfur region of western Sudan, confirming in its report that the Rapid Support Forces have committed atrocities, including war crimes, on a large scale during the civil war that has entered its third year.
Mission head Mohamed Shandi Othman stated in a statement: “The Rapid Support Forces have committed further crimes against humanity, including killings, sexual violence, gender-based violence, looting, and widespread destruction of livelihoods, sometimes reaching the level of persecution and genocide.”
