The killing of a young Tunisian by the French police has sparked widespread anger in Tunisia, as protesters took to the streets today (Thursday) in the city of Kasserine, the hometown of the victim, to condemn the incident.
Media reports stated that the young man, Abdelkader, who was legally residing in France, got into a fight with individuals inside a market after being expelled from a hotel due to non-payment of rent. He was chased by them, which led him to stab several of them with a knife, before the police intervened and shot him dead.
The French Ministry of the Interior announced that the crime "does not have a terrorist nature," describing it as "an isolated individual act related to personal disputes."
In response, the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the chargé d'affaires at the French embassy yesterday and delivered a strong protest regarding the killing of the young man, considering the incident "unjustifiable" and demanding a swift investigation to determine accountability.
Abdelkader's family and friends held demonstrations in Kasserine, calling for the circumstances of what they described as "premeditated murder" to be revealed and for those involved to be held accountable. The family confirmed that their son was legally residing in France and working at a butcher shop, but he was subjected to violence by a group of individuals due to a dispute with his employer, who owned the hotel where he was staying, emphasizing that the French police used lethal force without escalation.
Activists on social media circulated a video showing Abdelkader fighting with a group of individuals in a crowded street, holding a knife and a metal rod, before fleeing and being chased.
