كشفت مجلة «بوليتيكو» الأمريكية، اليوم (الإثنين)، عن استقالة رئيس وحدة الابتكار الدفاعي في وزارة الدفاع الأمريكية (البنتاغون)، دوغ بيك، بشكل مفاجئ، ليُصبح آخر شخصية بارزة من إدارة الرئيس السابق جو بايدن تغادر الوزارة، ما يقطع رابطًا أساسيًا مع وادي السيليكون.
ونقلت المجلة عن شخصين مطلعين على الأمر قولهما إن بيك، وهو نائب سابق لرئيس شركة «آبل»، قال في رسالة وداع عبر البريد الإلكتروني، اليوم، إن هذا سيكون يومه الأخير في المنصب، ولم يُقدّم أي سبب وراء قراره بالاستقالة.
وعيّنت وزارة الدفاع الأمريكية قيادة مؤقتة للوحدة، وبحسب المجلة، فإن وزارة الدفاع وبيك لم يردّا فوراً على طلبات التعليق على الاستقالة.
وكان المتحدث الرسمي السابق باسم البنتاغون، جون أوليوت، قد قال إنه سيستقيل من منصبه بحلول نهاية الأسبوع، وهو أحدث مسؤول رفيع المستوى في وزارة الدفاع يترك منصبه.
وتولى بيك قيادة وحدة الابتكار في البنتاغون منذ عام 2023، وكان مسؤولًا عن تحديث أدوات التكنولوجيا التجارية داخل وزارة الدفاع، وسعى خلال فترة عمله إلى التواصل مع المبتكرين في وادي السيليكون، الذين كانوا يتجنبون التعاون مع قطاع الدفاع قبل الحرب الروسية–الأوكرانية.
وكان وزير الدفاع السابق، لويد أوستن، قد منحه صلاحية رفع تقاريره مباشرة إلى قيادة البنتاغون، في محاولة لتسريع وتيرة عمليات الاستحواذ التكنولوجي التي تنفذها وحدة الابتكار.
كما عمل على البحث عن حلول تكنولوجية متقدمة بتكلفة أقل، وأرسل ممثلين عن وحدة الابتكار إلى أوروبا ومنطقة المحيط الهادئ لجمع الدروس المستفادة من أوكرانيا والصين.
وتأتي استقالة بيك بعد أيام فقط من قرار وزير الدفاع، بيت هيغسيث، إقالة ثلاثة من كبار القادة العسكريين، وهم: مدير وكالة الاستخبارات الدفاعية جيفري كروز، وقائدة قوات الاحتياط البحرية نانسي لاكور، وقائد قيادة الحرب الخاصة البحرية، ميلتون ساندز الثالث.
وكان رئيس أركان القوات الجوية، ديفيد ألوين، قد أعلن في وقت سابق اليوم تقاعده بشكل مفاجئ، قبل أن يُتم نصف ولايته الممتدة لأربع سنوات في أرفع منصب عسكري داخل القوات الجوية.
The American magazine "Politico" revealed today (Monday) the sudden resignation of Doug Beck, the head of the Defense Innovation Unit at the U.S. Department of Defense (the Pentagon), becoming the latest prominent figure from former President Joe Biden's administration to leave the department, severing a key link with Silicon Valley.
The magazine quoted two sources familiar with the matter saying that Beck, a former vice president at Apple, stated in a farewell email today that this would be his last day in the position, and he did not provide any reason for his decision to resign.
The U.S. Department of Defense appointed interim leadership for the unit, and according to the magazine, both the Pentagon and Beck did not immediately respond to requests for comments on the resignation.
Former Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby had stated that he would resign from his position by the end of the week, making him the latest high-ranking official at the Department of Defense to leave his post.
Beck had led the innovation unit at the Pentagon since 2023, and was responsible for updating commercial technology tools within the Department of Defense. During his tenure, he sought to engage with innovators in Silicon Valley, who had been avoiding collaboration with the defense sector prior to the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Former Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had granted him the authority to report directly to Pentagon leadership, in an effort to accelerate the pace of technology acquisitions carried out by the innovation unit.
He also worked on seeking advanced technological solutions at lower costs, sending representatives from the innovation unit to Europe and the Pacific region to gather lessons learned from Ukraine and China.
Beck's resignation comes just days after Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth decided to dismiss three senior military leaders: Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency Jeffrey Kruz, Commander of the Naval Reserve Nancy Lacore, and Commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command, Milton Sands III.
Earlier today, Air Force Chief of Staff David Allvin announced his unexpected retirement before completing half of his four-year term in the highest military position within the Air Force.
