A Syrian Foreign Ministry official announced that President Ahmad al-Shara will participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will be held in New York next month.
The official stated today (Monday) that President al-Shara will be the first Syrian president to speak at the United Nations since former President Nour al-Din al-Atassi (in 1967), and the first Syrian president ever to participate in the high-level General Assembly week, which takes place from September 22 to 30.
Al-Shara visited the French capital, Paris, last May, where he was received by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Previously, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani spoke for the first time before the United Nations Security Council after raising his country's new flag at the United Nations headquarters in New York, alongside the flags of 192 member states.
On another note, official sources revealed that a high-level Syrian delegation will visit Beirut at the end of the week to discuss several joint files.
The sources indicated that the delegation will discuss with Lebanese officials issues related to borders, displaced persons, Syrian prisoners, and wanted individuals fleeing to Syrian territory, in addition to electricity imports from Syria.
The intertwined borders between the two countries, which are crossed by many illegal smuggling routes, witnessed security tensions and clashes several months ago. Some Lebanese border towns were shelled in March from Syrian territory, resulting in the deaths of seven Lebanese citizens and injuring 52 others, while the Lebanese army responded to the sources of fire.
Dozens of Syrians in Lebanese prisons have carried out several protests, demanding their release and return to their country.
Relations between the two neighboring countries have experienced numerous tensions during the era of former regime president Bashar al-Assad. Lebanon has hosted around one million displaced persons, although hundreds of them have returned in recent months following the fall of the previous regime in December 2024.
